Event details
12. Event title:
‘Milk – The Natural Sports Drink’
13. Description of the core message of your event and key topics to be covered (c.100 words):
Milk is a nutrient-dense food that contains high quality proteins, carbohydrates (CHO) and electrolytes. These characteristics theoretically make milk an excellent recovery drink to consume following resistance training and endurance exercise. Research has shown that milk can be just as effective as commercially available sports drinks in promoting rehydration and recovery after exercise (and it has lots of other health benefits too!). This exhibition aims to highlight the key properties of milk that make it ‘nature’s sports drink’ and provide real examples from athletes on how they use milk effectively in their diet.
Press interest
23. Do you consider that the event will attract press interest?:
Yes
24. If yes, please summarise up to 4 key points you think will be of press interest:
It is hoped that we will be able to have present one of the Dairy Council’s young ambassador’s for sport (e.g. Liam Phillips – BMX World Champion Beth Tweddle – GB gymnast)
25. Do you have any other comments you would like to make or information you would like to include?:
This exhibition aims to increase people’s awareness of the properties of milk and how this can benefit exercise recovery. We aim to provide interactive visual displays showing how milk compares to other foods in terms of protein content, carbohydrate content and fat content as well as display information about how much water is in milk and the types of electrolytes it includes. The exhibition would be informative to any member of the public and we propose to put together fact sheets and a small work booklet for children that they can complete when they visit the exhibition. We would also hope to have some testimonials from Olympic athletes on how they use milk in their recovery from training (possibly with a visit from an Olympic athlete to the exhibition coordinated by the Dairy Council).
