Derek Smart Memorial Lecture

Professor Neal-Sturgess
is the former Director of the Birmingham Automotive Safety Centre, and a member of the Parliamentary Advisory Committee on Transport Safety.

The presentation will cover the background and International scene in automotive safety, with likely projections of future scenarios. Modelling of injury severity and vehicle crashworthiness will be briefly considered, showing the manner in which projections are obtained.

Gender effects will be considered, showing how much more at risk are females than males. Although overall fatality rates have been slowly declining this trend has now stopped, and pedestrian and cyclist fatalities are showing a slight increase.

The effects of the ageing pollution on future vehicle safety will be discussed, without reassuring consequences. Finally eSafety will be considered with some caveats.
