Speaker: Dr. Simon Cook

The (fai)lure of the mountains

For billions of people globally, mountains are a vital part of life, supplying water from their stores of ice and snow for hydro-power schemes, drinking and agriculture. However, mountains are dangerous environments that are changing rapidly as climate warms, and as a consequence of ongoing responses to tectonic activity and erosion by glaciers and rivers. This presentation will examine significant mountain hazards including glacial lake outburst floods and landslides, both with important consequences for communities living downstream. I’ll show how our ongoing research using the latest techniques in landscape mapping technology is being used to better understand these hazards.
