“What’s synthetic about synthetic biology - and should we worry about it?”

Prof. Brigitte Nerlich, University of Nottingham

Synthetic biology is a new and emerging field of biology that is attracting increasing scholarly attention and funding. Brigitte Nerlich is a social scientist and her role within the Synthetic Biology Research Centre is to explore opportunities for synthetic biologists and members of the public to work together in making sure that what happens in the science is known, understood and even critically assessed in society.

Brigitte will talk through some key aspects of synthetic biology and then put synthetic biology into a historical context of how scientists and people have thought about new types of biology, from around 1975, until now when Responsible Research and Innovation has become a hot topic.
