The Astronomy Bus to the Darkest Skies in England (Daytime)
13. Description of the core message of your event and key topics to be covered (c.100 words):
A daytime event (starting 4pm) at the Kielder Observatory on a BSF bus trip from Newcastle. We'll start the event on the bus. The event will see people observing the sun through our solar scopes and solar filters on our professional standard telescopes. Plus tours of the observatory and themed talks and refreshments. Also we'd like to bring some scopes down to the family area.
14. Does the event have particular local relevance?:
Yes
15. If so, please indicate what this is:
Kielder Observatory is the UK's leading public observatory. Based in Kielder Forest, Northumberland it enjoys the darkest skies in England. It's a premier local and public science facility.
16. How does your event relate to this year's theme of 'Making waves'?:
Our event is all about light. Starlight, sunlight. We're also one of the most successful attractions in Northumberland, with 40,000 visitors in the last 4 years. We are making waves in public science in the North East. Oh and we are next to Europe's largest man made lake if that counts.
