13. Description of the core message of your event and key topics to be covered (c.100 words):
The event/activity will focus on cancer progression and the cellular processes that contribute to the pathogenesis of this disease. To increase awareness of cell migration, activities could be set up that raise awareness. For example, having “races”, where one cell type races against another (using pre-recorded movies, getting people to bet which they think will win with fun prizes). These activities would then facilitate a conversation about why the “faster” cells are cancerous. The genetics of cancer could be added as a consideration. An obvious link would be with lifestyle and cancer avoidance. Information would be displayed around the exhibit. Microscopes could also be used to show pathology slides of cancer as well as exploring dishes of living cells. Practical hands on activities using modelling clay would be used to demonstrate and engage with younger age groups. This would allow for discussion about how different organelles go wrong in cancer.
