13. Description of the core message of your event and key topics to be covered (c.100 words):
The use of adaptive optics, originally pioneered for ground based astronomical telescopes has been used to enhance optical microscopy. By combining such elements with advanced real time image processing we have built up a sub-cellular imaging of a beating Zebrafish heart within a living fish, tracking cells over extended periods of time. The humble Zebrafish is an excellent model in which to study heart disease (BHF campaign on Mending Broken Hearts in 2011) as, unlike human hearts, it maintains the ability to repair itself throughout life. The presentation will demonstrate how technology can be transferred across fields to provide new depths of understanding.
14. Does the event have particular local relevance?:
15. If so, please indicate what this is:
Locally there is a high level of chronic heart disease but this is true for many areas of the UK. The basic research was also undertaken locally (Durham) and links with Newcastle as well as Edinburgh.
