13. Description of the core message of your event and key topics to be covered (c.100 words):
2013 sees the centenary of the Bohr Model of the atom. If you remember learning about the atom then you will almost certainly have been taught about the Bohr model of the atom, a shell-based system where electrons orbit the nucleus at set energy levels. It works brilliantly for simple atoms like hydrogen, but breaks down very quickly for more complex systems. The bohr model was the first “quantum” description of the atom which paved the way for the modern or complex quantum mechanical description we have today. Join us as we delve into the world at the atomic scale and the quantum weirdness it contains!
