Event details
12. Event title:
British Pain Society: Pain & Older People Special Interest Group Symposium
13. Description of the core message of your event and key topics to be covered (c.100 words):
There has been an increasing interest in health care contexts in the use for clinical purposes of social media, mobile phone/tablet apps, and other technologies. This symposium will discuss this emergent field in general and showcase two specific examples (Abbey Pain Scale iPhone App and a web-based Pain and Dementia Guide for Carers). There will be an opportunity to debate the issues raised by new technologies and consider areas ripe for development.
16. How does your event relate to this year's theme of 'Making waves'?:
New technologies hold great promise in health care. Developments in eHealth are not without problems (for example digital exclusion and privacy). Who will control these new technologies and who will be the real beneficiaries?
Press interest
23. Do you consider that the event will attract press interest?:
Yes
24. If yes, please summarise up to 4 key points you think will be of press interest:
A new iPhone App and website have been developed to help enhance the care provided to older people with chronic pain.
25. Do you have any other comments you would like to make or information you would like to include?:
The symposium will be advertised at the British Pain Society (BPS) Annual Scientific Meeting in April; this will give an indication of numbers. The primary audience will be members of the BPS special interest group in older people; but invitations will also be given to local clinicians and others with interest in new technologies (e.g. at Northumbria & Newcastle Universities).
