British Science Association and Sciencewise partnership

The British Science Association will be working in partnership with AEA Technology and Involve, to deliver the next three year phase of the Sciencewise Expert Resource Centre for Public Dialogue in Science and Innovation (Sciencewise) programme. The programme offers a unique system of support for public dialogue and engagement, bringing together scientists, policy makers and members of the public.

Since its inception in 2007, Sciencewise has worked with over 12,000 members of the public in consultation, to help policy makers understand the public opinions and concerns in newly emerging science and technology issues. The knowledge gained from these discussions has helped guide policy development, and supported policy makers making decisions in highly contentious areas of science and technology.

The programme has already demonstrated its value in raising awareness among scientists and policymakers about the importance of public dialogue. Future aspirations are now to build on this solid foundation, maintaining a strong focus on funding, delivering and supporting dialogue projects in a time of fast-paced fast paced scientific development.

The British Science Association will concentrate on the public interface, through our website and planned online public forums. We will also have a strong focus on policy analysis and information gathering, working in collaboration with the Cambridge Centre for Science and Policy.  All partners will work on the strategic development of Sciencewise. This exciting programme of public engagement is key to the Association’s charitable mission, and provides a new way to help members of the public access science, engage with it and feel a sense of ownership about its direction.
