Your astonishing liver
From disease investigation to transplant innovation, your liver is remarkable. Find out more.
Scientists and surgeons introduce you to the body’s most hardworking and remarkable organ. See how the transplant technology of the future is being trialled in Birmingham, and how a modern diet has led to an increasingly common type of liver disease.
Professor David Mutimer is a liver specialist who came to Birmingham to be part of the ground breaking scientific research being undertaken here into liver disease and transplantation. David will introduce you to the liver and why you need it to stay alive; diseases that are on the verge of being cured thanks to scientific research and drug development; and an increasingly common 'modern' disease that is causing major health problems across the globe!
How is an organ kept alive when it leaves the body? What makes it suitable for donation? Which patient should receive it? How is it transplanted? Mr Darius Mirza is a leading Liver Consultant and Transplant Surgeon who will guide you through the journey of liver donation. He will also introduce you to split liver transplants (two lives saved from one liver) and ‘LIVE’ liver donations (you don't have to be deceased to donate!).
The Liver Assist Device by Organ Assist and the OrganOx® metra™ are ground-breaking machines that ‘give life’ and have the potential to revolutionise future liver transplantation. Once a liver is removed from the body it starts to deteriorate, which means it can only be transported a very short distance to a recipient. Mr Barney Stephenson is a surgeon and scientist who is involved with research development of these machines, and an amazing trial taking place in Birmingham to ascertain what a liver needs to stay alive outside the body and how long it can survive using the machines. He will also discuss the implications of this research for those on the transplant register.
Definitely. Maybe. Not a chance! Everyone has a view about organ donation and whether they would be willing to help another person live should the unthinkable happen to them. Dr Greg Moorlock is an expert who will make you doubt your beliefs and question your own opinion. Would you be happy to make the decision for a close relative? What if you had strong religious beliefs? Would you like your organs to go to someone who was not willing to be a donor themselves? Should organ donation be mandatory? These and many other questions will be explored in this interactive session that will make you stop, and re-think what you thought.
Your chance to ask our experts anything you ever wanted to know about the liver, liver diseases, organ transplantation, being a research scientist, life as a surgeon or doctor ... or anything else you can think of! They love being quizzed and sharing their knowledge!
