Event details
12. Event title:
Can the world feed 9 billion people in 2050?
13. Description of the core message of your event and key topics to be covered (c.100 words):
•although world food production has increased over the past 40 years, nutrient use efficiency has declined •there are limiting factors to the intensification of agriculture, including the finite availability of the plant nutrient phosphorous and the increasing financial and environmental cost of production of nitrogen (linked to availability of fossil fuel). •research into ecologically sustainable systems, has been less common – but will be more important for the future •people will have to change what they eat and recycle human waste carefully
14. Does the event have particular local relevance?:
Yes
15. If so, please indicate what this is:
Sustainable Farming Research being carried out at the Nafferton Ecological Farming Group, Newcastle University, as part of EU and world-wide projects
16. How does your event relate to this year's theme of 'Making waves'?:
Using science to develop sustainable production of food within biological limits. Adaptation of the eating and re-cycling habits of the growing world population.
Press interest
23. Do you consider that the event will attract press interest?:
Yes
24. If yes, please summarise up to 4 key points you think will be of press interest:
Future and present food security, Greenhouse Gas Emissions, nutrient use efficient crops and animals, adaptation of diets and recycling of human waste
25. Do you have any other comments you would like to make or information you would like to include?:
We are planning to secure an independent chair from the Newcastle Institute for Research on Sustainability, but cannot confirm at the moment. Proposed timings: •Introductions 10 minutes •Prof. Leifert presentation 30 minutes •Prof. Rayner comment and information 15 minutes •Peter Melchett comment and information 15 minutes •Open discussion with audience up to 40 minutes •Chairman’s summing up 10 minutes Total up to 2 hours maximum.
