Science investigations

CREST Star activities focus on hands-on investigation

Hands-on learning and fun

CREST Star activties are a great fun way to learn

Taking science outside

Many of the activities are perfect for the outdoor classroom

Engaging young learners

CREST Star engages children through real life context set in a story and supported by Concept Cartoons created by Millgate House Education with the input of teachers to ensure they are great resources

You don't have to be a scientist...

In fact, you don't even have to be a teacher! Full notes are provided as part of the resources including a list of everything you need to for the activity.

Encouraging independant learning

Children are encouraged to work independently of adults and come up with their own investigations

Exciting partnerships

You can work towards your your CREST Star awards with activities and workshops at some of the UK's most exciting science learning centres

More than just science...

CREST Star activties include investigations into other STEM subjects such as Design & Technology, and cross curricular links to Maths and English

Superstar Polymer competition

We gave schools the chance to win a set of polymer related resource for your science club or school worth £200, and a £50 individual prize for the winning inventors!

"Scientists at Horners use special substances called polymers to create great new products. But they need more ideas! Can you design a great new polymer product?"

Key Stage 1 winner

Compostable Lunch Bag by Amelie, age 7
Northlands Primary School, Rugby

"This bag can be used by everyone who will be going on a pcinic. It is made out of a polymer which dissolves in water. It is compostable, so after you have had your lunch you can throw it in the compost bin..."

Key Stage 2 winners

Best invention
Sound Insulating Polymer Wallpaper by Aalyah, age 10
Real Initiative Home Education, Leyton

"My idea is sound insulating wallpaper. Instead of having to pull out your wall to install sound insulation you simply put on the sound insulating wallpaper... The name of my wallpaper is P&Q - Peace & Quiet. The Q comes after the P (the quiet comes after the pasting)"

School prize
The Magnificent Robotic Robot by Louie, age 7, Alexander, age 10, and Ewan, Age 9
Muggington C of E Primary School, Ashbourne

As the individual winner is home educated we had to choose another entry for the school prize. The robot project was really well presented, and included a photo of the robot they built as a model. Since this was a team effort they could not win the individual prize but we are very happy to name Muggington C of E as the winning school.
