ZSL London & Whipsnade Zoos

ZSL London Zoo & ZSL Whipsnade Zoo offer a large range of workshops accredited to CREST Star. If you’re looking for a fantastic day out for your class, with amazing animals to see and plenty of science-learning opportunities then ZSL zoos are  the place for you! The Zoological Society of London is an international conservation charity including field projects in more than 50 countries, a scientific institute and two fantastic zoos. ZSL London Zoo is an oasis in the city with over 750 species from tall giraffes to tiny bugs, and ZSL Whipsnade Zoo is the UK’s biggest zoo, set in six hundred acres of beautiful countryside.

At a ZSL zoo you can get up close to the world’s most interesting wildlife, watch talks and feeds, and enjoy a wealth of outside-the-classroom experiences. Book a hands-on learning session with our Education Team to bring your day to life: from habitats to camouflage, endangered species to amazing adaptations, there are topics to suit all ages from 3 to over-18. All the sessions give learners the opportunity to interact with fascinating items, to explore issues which interest them and extend their understanding of the natural world. What better way to bring learning to life?

Colour and camouflage (Star)
How do animals use colour and pattern in their daily lives? Explore various resources in this hands-on session to find out how colour helps animals to survive and then design your own beetles to take away with you.

Defend Yourself (Star)
Through a selection of feely-boxes and other hands-on opportunities, explore different methods of self-defence. Collect tips from the animal kingdom then work in small groups to design a well-defended animal.

On the Edge (Star)
Find out more about threats to endangered species and what can be done to help by exploring various biofacts and printed materials. Collect information here to design a poster at home or at school and enter our annual poster competition.

Habitats and Adaptations (SuperStar)
Classes extend their pervious study of habitats to discover more about animals’ adaptations Through hands-on study of skulls, skins and other biofacts.

Investigating Vertebrates (SuperStar)
Use hands-on experience with a variety of skins, bones and other biofacts to establish the characteristic features of the five vertebrate classes.

On the Edge (SuperStar)
Find out more about threats to endangered species and what can be done to help by exploring various biofacts and printed materials. Collect information here to design a poster at home or at school and enter our annual poster competition.

Puzzles for Parrots (SuperStar)
When the Whipsnade parrots are not out flying we provide them with “enrichment”: activities which encourage them to use their feet, beaks, senses and brains to solve puzzles. Help us with this important part of our work by planning and making an item of enrichment.

Teeth and Diets: Investigate! (SuperStar)
This investigation challenges teams who have already studied teeth to identify mystery skulls, using clues and hands-on experience.

Whose Poo? (SuperStar)
With links to the study of teeth, food chains and habitats this activity will appeal to all learners who enjoy a fun challenge! Explore some biofacts and information about key species and use what you find out to complete the challenge: whose poo?
