Bog boffins, wildlife wizards and bird brains - Saving nature with science

Saturday, 23 March, 2013 - 11:00 to 16:00

The RSPB and their partners have many fascinating scientific projects on the go, all day, everyday. Up in the Flow Country of Caithness and Sutherland, scientists are uncovering the best ways to restore the valuable, carbon rich peat bog after huge areas were drained and planted with trees in the 1980’s. Come and have a go at managing a little piece of bog. Find out about some of the plants and animals which will benefit from this huge piece of work and ultimately how it will benefit generations to come.

FAME is an international partnership project working to help safeguard the future of the Atlantic Ocean and North Sea. Scientists are working at UK sites along the Atlantic coast, including Fair Isle and Orkney, fitting high-resolution GPS tags to seabirds. The tag downloads give an accurate picture of where seabirds go to find food when they leave land. Come and be a seabird looking for your lunch - where will your journey take you? Find out about epic real life journeys which some of our seabirds make every day, simply to find a meal. It puts a weekly trip to the supermarket in perspective!

With plenty of hands on activities and fascinating insights we hope you’ll feel that science can be fun!
