SPITFIRE Inspirational Icon of Engineering Excellence by Julian Mitchell (great-nephew of Reginald Mitchell)
Wednesday, 19 March, 2014 - 18:00 to 20:00
This lecture will chart the development of the Spitfire with the best science and engineering skills of its time, review its remarkable achievements in the Battle of Britain and throughout WWII and reflect on the combination of elements which make it a paradigm of design excellence. Operation Spitfire will bring the City's Mk XVI Spitfire RW388 and the gallery in which it resides in the Potteries Museum and Art Gallery to life. By restoring this remarkable aircraft, we hope to demonstrate the diverse range of skills needed to produce such a model of engineering excellence. We aim to inspire current and future generations to strive for excellence, whether this be through following a career in engineering or simply applying any one of the many principles demonstrated to their everyday life. Our restoration of RW388 will create a lasting frame of reference as the only Spitfire correct in every engineering detail.
