George's marvellous toothpaste
Westfield Primary School's NSEW theme is George's marvellous toothpaste. The week will link with book week which will be themed around George's Marvellous Medicine. The children will be told that George has grown up and is now working as a chemist who invents toothpaste - but he's stuck and needs their help. Working in groups, children (from all classes) will research, invent, test and market their own brand of toothpaste (this will include inventing packaging, adverts, slogans etc). They will use real life ingredients to make their toothpaste (e.g. baking powder, glycerine, cornflour, flavouring, colouring etc) and will subject them to proper scientific tests which they will design themselves. The idea for our theme came from a British Science Association CREST Award activity. All lessons during the week be related to this theme. At the end of the week the best designs will be entered into a Dragons Den/Apprentice style competition. Each group will present their toothpaste to an invited panel of judges (consisting of local business leaders/scientists) They will have to explain the science behind their toothpaste recipe and present their packaging, design/adverts. Prizes will be awarded for best recipe, packaging and advert. Children will also be inventing toothbrushes to help Zoo keepers clean the teeth of different types of animals (real and imagined) and learning about the history of toothpaste. They will recreate some early recipes from Ancient Egypt & Rome.
