The Moorland Indicators of Climate Change Initiative (MICCI project)has been running for 5 years now and takes place during National Science and Engineering Week. It is a project that involved young people doing some scientific research work on the moorlands of Britain to see if they are in a good state of health from a Carbon management point of view.The uplands of Britain are a major source of Carbon and whether they are a carbon sink or a carbon source is of great interest to the climate change debate. Teaming up with Scientific researchers coordinated by Moors for the Future, Exmoor Mires project, the University of Manchester and CEH in Wales, teams of students from schools all around the UK's National Parks visit their local moorland areas and get involved in a series of simple experiments to measure peat depth, water table height, pH and vegetation cover and try to measure the "carbon health" of their own moorland site. The results are then collated and analysed by researchers in the Peak District and become part of the bigger picture UK wide. As well as learning about the link between upland areas, people and climate change,this is a real opportunity for schools to be involved in a "hands on" way with some real scientific research across the country.
