This year National Science & Engineering Week is working with the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine on a national experiment: Flusurvey!
Launched in 2009, Flusurvey is an online system for measuring influenza trends in the UK. In contrast to traditional surveillance methods, data is collected directly from the general public, rather than via hospitals or GPs. This is particularly important because many people with flu don't visit a doctor so don't feature in traditional flu surveillance.
We're asking everyone to register on Flusurvey - when asked where you heard about the survey, please select "British Science Association NSEW". Then every week you'll be emailed a link to a webpage. If you have no symptoms, click "healthy" - it's as simple as that! If you have symptoms, you'll be asked a couple of quick background questions.
Schools can download a lesson plan, activity ideas and student handouts for teaching their students about flu and getting them committed to completing the survey. Please visit the school page for more information!
