The 19th Century and the Founding of the British Association
Dr Rebekah Higgitt - National Maritime Museum
Talk
The 19th-century scientific world was characterised by both increasing professionalisation and ever-larger audiences for popular books, lectures and exhibitions. These pressures led to important changes within the Royal Society, not least because they also created rivals in the form of specialist societies and the supremely generalist British Association.

Science and the public in the last 100 years
Dr Peter Collins - The Royal Society
Talk
The British Association engaged actively, and at times controversially, in debates about public attitudes to science during the 1930s, while the Royal Society kept a lower profile. Fifty years later the Society published the seminal Bodmer report on public understanding of science. This talk will examine these episodes and the relations between the Society and the Association.
