Learn more about the scheme

The Media Fellows are given:

  • An intensive briefing day of media advice from journalists and a freelance science writer
  • The opportunity to be mentored by a professional news journalist for 3-6 weeks. Have a look at our current media hosts
  • Experience finding and pitching stories, writing science news articles or producing science radio, podcast or television programmes
  • The opportunity to attend the British Science Festival press launch and other UK press conferences
  • The opportunity to work alongside over 100 members of the press in the British Science Festival Press Centre
  • The opportunity to network with other researchers, journalists and science communicators
  • Experience working to tight deadlines
  • Insight into the news process and day-to-day life of journalists
  • Continued support from the British Science Association with finding media opportunities and increasing your involvement with the media and public engagement
  • Membership of the Media Fellowship alumni network

If you apply for the scheme, you are expected to meet the following dates:

18 March 2013  Applications' deadline

1 May 2013 All applicants are notified about the outcome of their application

5 June 2013 Briefing/ training day, London

July - September 2013 3-6 weeks placements, booked according to the media host and the Fellow availability

5 September 2013 (tbc) British Science Festival media launch, London

7-12 September 2013 Fellows attend the British Science Festival, in Newscastle, as a representative of their media host organisation 

11 October 2013 Deadline for placement report

29 October 2013 Debriefing day, London

  4. Send us your online application and your employer's letter of support by 18 March
