Chair's Report - 2012

Hannah Bowley, Chair and Secretary, July 2011 –  July 2012

I took over as Secretary in July 2011, agreeing to coordinate meetings for the time being, in the hope that we would find a Chair soon after. It has taken a year to find that Chair, but now together with our long-standing Treasurer Nick we have several primary officers (Chair, Secretary, Treasurer, Publicity and Design Officers) to keep the group running successfully.

During this year, we have grown from around 4 or 5 committee members in about August, to around 17 members in June 2012. This allows the work to be spread and not put too much pressure on any one member, which can only be a good thing! While some people are now moving on, there is still a solid core of people to work together and continue the positive work that we have managed this year.

During 2011 – 2012 we have continued events from previous years, including the pub science quiz at the Johnson Arms in December, public lectures throughout the year in conjunction with the University of Nottingham, and Science in the Park at Wollaton Hall in March, all of which have been extremely well attended and received positive feedback. We have also set wheels in motion for new activities including a scale model of the solar system centred on Wollaton Hall and various collaborative ideas with people from outside the group.

As I move on to pastures new, I would like to say thank you to those who have worked so hard this year, and wish the 2012 – 2013 committee every success in continuing with these events, both established and new, and hope that the group can continue to promote science in many different ways, to new people, working with as many different sets of people as possible.
