Discover Adventure: Join a sport fundraising challenge to support your local branch

We currently provide four sources of funds to support Branches in the development and delivery of their event programmes.
Branches are eligible to receive a start-up grant of £500 in their first year. At the end of the first year, if a Branch has met all of the minimum requirements and has a balance of less than £1000, they will be eligible to receive a second and final grant of a further £500.
These grants are allocated once a year to support Branch events and activities taking place during National Science & Engineering Week. Applications open in September.
Branches can apply for strategic grants to meet the costs of their events programme. Grants are allocated to eight branches a year, and are based on the quality of the proposed programme, and its relation to our objectives. Visit our Strategic Grant page for more information and details on how to apply.
Many Branches seek to raise funds from other sources that are external to the British Science Association. In order to support this fundraising activity at a local level, we offer to match the money raised by Branches. This means that up to £250 of the funds raised by your local branch could potentially be doubled through this scheme. Visit our Match Funding page for more information and details on how to apply.
There are several ways to raise additional funds for your Branch that will help to further strengthen Branch programmes. These sources fall into four broad categories:
Schemes such as EasyFundraising, which enable you to support your branch whilst shopping online, at no extra cost.
If you need any additional support or ideas for fundraising, the Regional Team is on hand to help. Please don’t hesitate to contact your Regional Officer. Training is also available to branch members wanting to learn more about fundraising techniques.
The following document was created for National Science & Engineering Week so the grant schemes advertised within this document may not be applicable, however, the sections on sponsorship and possible organisations to contact may also be useful.

What payment options are available? How will the Association support me?
Open challenges are open to anyone wanting to raise money for any charity. We really appreciate our supporters’ help but unfortunately - due to limited resources - the British Science Association can only be supported via the self-payment option. By choosing the self-payment option you will agree to fund your own Trip Cost[1] and donate 100% of your fundraising – whatever amount – to your chosen charity. At the Association, we highly appreciate the contribution of our supporters and we don’t want them to sustain any extra financial burdens.
Once you register, the Regional Fundraising and Support Officer will receive notification from Discover Adventure that you have decided to support the British Science Association as your chosen charity. Although you will be dealing directly with Discover Adventure regarding administration of your trip and everything that concerns your challenge, the Association would like to support you and show you their gratitude. The Regional Fundraising and Support Officer will contact you and, together with your Regional Officer, they will give you fundraising tips and they will help you advertise your story on our newsletter, social media and website, and when communicating with our supporters.
The Association wants to support you in the best possible way and help you cover trip costs/registration fees so please don't hesitate to get in touch with the Regional Fundraising and Support Officer. After previous agreement between you and your branch, your supported branch will be eligible to apply for match funding to help you cover your trip costs up to £250. If trip costs/registration fees exceed that amount and you are not able/willing to pay full costs, we would suggest asking your local branch if they are happy for some of the funds raised to be used to do so. In any case, this should not exceed 30% of the total amount raised. Discover Adventure also offer a Flexi Payment option so you can pay your trip cost in as many instalments as you like to help spread the cost.

We are happy to announce that the British Science Association has recently teamed up with Rethink Recycling Appeal. The company collects old mobile phones, printer cartridges, DVDs, Laptops and other electronic devices for reuse and recycling, allowing you to turn your waste into donations for your Branch! The British Science Association recognises the importance of reducing its environmental footprint and will take steps to make its office and business both sustainable and ethical. By supporting our recycling appeal, you will help raise funds for our Branches and will you also make a valuable contribution to the Association’s environmental policy.
Donating is very easy and completely free! All you need to do is click here and scroll down to select the British Science Association appeal and then click on Donate now to request a collection. The company will send you free postage envelopes for you to send back or arrange a free courier collection if you collect a minimum of 10 items. Please always check on their website what items you can send as you might be charged 50p/kg if you send items that cannot be recycled. If in doubt, please contact their friendly and helpful staff.
There are two ways for you to donate
1) If you collect at least ten items at the time, you will be able to request free courier collections. This will enable us to identify your postcode and link it to your local Branch, therefore giving you the opportunity to donate to a specific Branch…so please get in touch with other fellow supporters to join forces and collect your recyclable goods! You can even collect during events or Branch meetings.
2) You can request free postage envelopes to send back to Rethink Recycling Appeal if you are unable to collect at least ten items. The funds raised will go into a general pot which will be equally redistributed to all Branches as this option doesn’t allow us to match postcodes with individual Branches…but it would be the ideal solution if you want to support more than one Branch!
If you need any further clarification, please do not hesitate to contact the Regional Fundraising and Support Officer, Giulia De Matteis.
Thank you for helping us support our Branches and reach our environmental goals! Click here to find some more interesting facts about recycling.
