Event details
12. Event title:
Low Carbon Vehicles in Newcastle - Competition
13. Description of the core message of your event and key topics to be covered (c.100 words):
Ahead of the British Science Festival, Newcastle Science City is launching a competitive challenge to invite exciting, creative and green ideas for innovative low carbon commuting around our city. Anyone can enter – we want as many ideas as possible. Stage 1 (in the Festival run-up) will involve describing the concepts; a shortlist of 3 will then work up their ideas in more detail in stage 2. We hope to showcase shortlisted concepts (pictures/posters/models etc) as part of the Transport Science Space exhibition of University transport projects, e.g. electric bikes, vehicles and solar plane. An early evening event will then be held, where shortlisted entries will present their ideas to a panel of judges. This will take the form of a small reception event, with invited guests from competition entrants
14. Does the event have particular local relevance?:
Yes
15. If so, please indicate what this is:
North East England has a history of innovation and engineering in its automotive sector, and is home to some of the world’s leading companies. The automotive industry is currently undergoing the biggest transformation in its history with the introduction of electric and hybrid vehicles and it is as a result of North East England’s innovative automotive environment that the region is at the forefront of this activity.
16. How does your event relate to this year's theme of 'Making waves'?:
We are looking for creative, technically innovative and hopefully deliverable ideas that might make a real impact on how we travel, how we can save energy and how we lead our lives in this city (and others) now and into the future. We want the competitive challenge to engender participation and for the ideas to be presented in a way that is accessible and exciting for everyone.
Press interest
23. Do you consider that the event will attract press interest?:
Yes
24. If yes, please summarise up to 4 key points you think will be of press interest:
• This is a competitive challenge, open to everyone – with a final winner • We are encouraging all ideas – some will be serious, some will be more “left field” • The North East is actively engaged in low carbon vehicle development • There is wide interest in the sustainability agenda
