Super science

Super science activity pack for SEN groups

Super science contains accessible activities and investigations adapted from existing NSEW activity packs for use with a range of audiences including those with learning difficulties or special needs.

It has been designed for children who have difficulty following instructions given purely in text and/or find it hard to remember verbal instructions so there are accompanying pupil flash-cards with symbols created by Widgit, who produce symbol-supported resources for a range of special needs.

For more details about the activities and how to use the pack, check out the Super science introductory video on our YouTube channel!

The activities have been developed for use in discrete 20–60 minute class or science club sessions. They have been created to support activities during National Science & Engineering Week although the activities can be used any time. A range of themes are explored in the pack, using cheap and easy materials. Three of the activities can be extended to gain a Crest Star Investigator award and there are ideas on extension activities throughout.

About Widgit™ symbols:

Widgit™ Symbols add visual support to the printed word, giving easier access to information and separating it from the challenge of reading. Text with symbol support helps people with a range of abilities to communicate, access information and be more independent. The wide range of groups with whom symbol-supported resources can communicate with include people with learning difficulties, those with hearing impairment and non-English speakers. We hope this pack will be used in SEN schools and also in adult learning centres, at home and in communities so everyone can celebrate science and engineering with fun, hands on activities.
