What a waste

Join thousands by taking part in this out of the box activity

What a waste is a simple and exciting way to get involved in National Science & Engineering Week and we have lots of extension ideas for running waste-themed activities. While the competition has closed you can still use the resources to run a fun and easy activity to engage pupils with the science and engineering of waste.

We have teamed up with EDF Energy’s the Pod to challenge 5–14 year olds to design a product that is made partly, or entirely, of waste materials.

The competition is now closed but you can still use the free downloadable resources below.
Over 20,000 pupils took part and over 5,000 posters were entered into the competition- thank you to all that took part.

The winners will be announced here soon!

Missed out? Why not check out the resources below? Great for home or school.

Teachers notesPupils hand-out

NEW! Check out our brand new waste-themed activity pack. Created in partnership with the Pod, Waste investigators contains 11 exciting extension activities that are easy to run in home or school.

I sent my school's posters in for the competition- what happens next?

Entries will be judged by a panel and the most innovative, best researched and well-presented entries in each age category will win a prize- we have two Leapfrog Leappad 2 tablets for junior and intermediate 1 category winners and two Kindle Fire HDs with vouchers for the intermediate 2 and senior category winners. One overall winner will also win a day of outreach from the Science Museum for their school.
