This workshop introduces the concepts of how people interact with natural hazards (earthquakes and volcanoes). The workshop will be split into two parts; the first looks at how science can begin to predict, understand and aid natural hazards. The second part of the session involves making a volcano!!! For this part of the session the students will be split into teams of 4-5 to build their very own volcano and can challenge the other teams to see who can build the biggest volcano, what makes the best eruption and what different shapes of volcanoes mean for different eruptions. During the session the students will be asked to think about a couple of questions relating to what they learnt during the first half of the session such as Why might it be good to live near volcanoes, how are volcanic eruptions and flooding similar and how can scientists help people live near volcanoes? Discussion of their answers to these questions will form the summary at the end of the session.
