18. What will the format of your event be?:
Talks/presentations - 1 person presenting new science or for a specific audience with Q & A; or a TED talk
Show/Performance/Demo lecture - entertainment events for adults and families
Interactive exhibition - drop in activity, hands-on stand
19. Please give any details about the format of your event you feel are relevant.:
The show will be structured so that the play or fiction will ask certain questions about transhumanism that verge on the philosophical, emotional, ethical and moral. The scientists will ask the same questions through their scientific "facts", followed ultimately by a happening in the story of the play, that will require no explanation as the audience will now have a shared language and be well-informed on the context of science and emotion. The possible questions we are focussing on are: 1)“Why do we want to live forever? Can we?” 2)“Can we enhance ourselves and grow - what is the benefit and price?” 3)”Can we control our own bodies to heal themselves? In a world that keeps being uncontrollable?” The areas of science we would like to focus on are: cognitive enhancement, genetic modification and nanotechnology in biological uses. The event will take place on the day and we are flexible as to which day and what time. Audiences (in this instance, festival attendees) follow the cast to different areas of the festival where different scenes unfold. These can all be in the same building/floor. These scenes form the storytelling basis of the overall social context of authentic scientific lectures incorporated within the play as the audience would have the chance to walk into a lecture room at different points in the story and "sit-in" on the scientists giving 12-minute talks for non-specialist audiences with 3 min for Q & A. This can be the same lecture room in all 3 instances with the rest of the "scenes" taking place in the hallway, smaller rooms leading off, a cafe in the building etc. It is very flexible to the needs of the festival. Staged in this “Sleep No More” like fashion, five major scenes would be staged where groups are led by a character they follow. There would be three shorter scenes at junctions in the play, that are staged in a way that "allow" individuals to choose to experience a moment when each of the characters have a "private" moment when no one is apparently watching. Uniquely, this project will put our scientific advances and developments in a very direct human and social context whilst maintaining full scientific authenticity. Altogether there will be 45 minutes of lectures (3 academics) and 40/45 minutes of dramatic theatre content leading to 1.5 hours max. There will be the use of a pico-projector in the scenes where there will be messages from an iphone from one of the characters which the audience will be encouraged to play with and also the possibility of the lectures having the option to be replayed in their own time.
20. Location/venue:
Venue and location to be allocated by the Festival team
21. Venue requirements:
As mentioned, the venue requirements are flexible to the festival as we can do with: 1) Only one lecture theatre where all 3 of the 12 minute academic talks will take place; 2) Hallways surrounding the lecture theatre, small room leading off in the same floor, perhaps a lobby/cafe area in the building for the theatric element of the event. 3) Daytime when other talks and scientific presentations and demonstrations are occurring. 4) We are flexible on audience size and wish to cater for what is convenient for the festival as there could also be a possibility of doing repeat shows for smaller audiences throughout the day.
22. Audience Level:
General Public
Event details
12. Event title:
"NEAR" : an immersive, site-specific performance set in the "near future" tackling the subject of a "dreamed-of" new world where "Transhumans" exist. The play tackles the all too real possibility of this happening by incorporating real scientists and their research (live lectures) into an exciting, new and innovative storytelling narrative within a fictitious play.
13. Description of the core message of your event and key topics to be covered (c.100 words):
As we grow older, as we lose parents, as the storm surges, the tides rise in this world we are hell bent on survival and we’re all on a desperate search for the Truth. Science is thrust into the spotlight in a huge new way. The Gung Ho Down is interested in incorporating real scientists into the play itself, maintaining the authentic scientific voice in the form of an immersive "Science Festival" in the near future. In NEAR, a play set at a scientific convention, two scientists and their two 20-something "son and daughter", are seemingly relieving the stresses of the day at the cafe, the lobby/hallway etc. but as the audience is drawn further into the story it is clear we are in the near future - and we are getting wrapped up in the lives of two "transhuman" scientists and the products of their search for something more perfect than being human: their own children. Ultimately "NEAR" while tackling the subject of "post-humans/transhumans" through nanotechnology, genetic modification, and cognitive enhancement, is a very human experience. The premise of the event is to enrich the audience member both intellectually and viscerally by combining academics and artists: the 3 Academics, through their research offer a practical/theoretical reality of the subject and the Artists (actors/musicians) express through their artform their experiential reality of the same subject coming together in a fictional play, that draws from actual truth. NEAR will hopefully allow the audience member to walk away empowered to ask more questions about their own lives and beliefs.
14. Does the event have particular local relevance?:
Yes
15. If so, please indicate what this is:
On speaking to Farrah Nasir, we discovered that we may be able to source leading academics from Newaastle University in the areas of bio-enhancement.
16. How does your event relate to this year's theme of 'Making waves'?:
The topic of transhumanism is a controversial one as it has a very real possibility of actually occurring, has not quite hit the public consciousness and has a great deal of social, ethical and moral repercussions. The even aims to contextualise both the science and the social framework.
Press interest
23. Do you consider that the event will attract press interest?:
Yes
24. If yes, please summarise up to 4 key points you think will be of press interest:
1) Unique and pioneering format of storytelling combining the authentic scientific voice in the form of live lectures and contextualising theatre. 2) Subject of Transhumanism is almost a "best-kept" secret, shrouded in mystery and possibly even myth. The event takes it away from sci-fi with real facts and yet retains excitement in the storytelling pace and subject matter. 3) Illustrates the possibility of leading advances in science in an imaginative, fun and thought-provoking manner.
25. Do you have any other comments you would like to make or information you would like to include?:
We would like consideration of a budget for the actor's time and commitment. l hope to engage scientists with the involvement of the Festival from local universities with their own individual public engagement funding. There are 4 actors and we hope to pay them a salary of £150 each for a day's work and the rehearsal leading up to it. We hope to bring an additional technical manager and hope for consideration of an additional £50. In addition, we would like their travel and possibly travel of the 3 scientists to be paid for.
