Event details
12. Event title:
Extracting DNA from kiwi fruits!
13. Description of the core message of your event and key topics to be covered (c.100 words):
Using simple household ingredients including washing up liquid and ethanol it is possible to break open the cells of fruits like kiwis or stawberries and extract the DNA. No need for microscopes. It's a great way to visualise DNA and explain many aspects of cell biology including how the cells fit together to form tissues and organisms and how they package the DNA up so small that we can't see it. Having plastic models of DNA helps to visualise this as well.
16. How does your event relate to this year's theme of 'Making waves'?:
Next generation sequecing of DNA is progressing the field of medicine very quickly and this is making waves in our current understanding of genetics in relation to medicine. This workshop explains the DNA on the basic level.
