Your event
10. Which of the following areas of science does you event best fit into?:
General
Event type and format
11. Do you have a preferred day for your event to take place on?:
Saturday 7 September 2013
17. Length:
1 hour
18. What will the format of your event be?:
Show/Performance/Demo lecture - entertainment events for adults and families
19. Please give any details about the format of your event you feel are relevant.:
We will either need to talk to you about sourcing a Newcastle based scientist, or bring someone who has worked with Simon before. An alternative is to to use film clips of various experiments using elements Simon mentions in the book as we will have this by then. It's unusual in that no one else is writing fact based fiction around the periodic table.
20. Location/venue:
Venue and location to be allocated by the Festival team
21. Venue requirements:
Simon needs full AV to be able to show his presentation which we will bring on a memory stick. The presentation includes slides and video clips so audio is required. Clip microphone needed. As to venue location - do families come to the campus or are we better off requesting a city centre venue? Please can you advise of costs if we were to use a city centre venue? I imagine we would get an audience of 150 if we promote it widely in the region. Theatre style would work best.
22. Audience Level:
Families ( with children aged 12 & under)

12. Event title:
Broadcaster Simon Mayo introduces Itch the element hunter. With live experiments on stage it’s guaranteed to be an effervescent event.
13. Description of the core message of your event and key topics to be covered (c.100 words):
Simon’s event is highly accessible and good fun. The main character in his book ITCH is a 14 year old accident-prone element hunter, for whom science is a weapon, elements are his gadgets. Simon introduces the periodic table, shows the audience some elements and talks about the elements Itch collects. The book is a fast paced adventure which shows just how dangerous the element Itch discovers could be in the wrong hands. The scientist with him will do some live experiments demonstrating the power of elements. He touches on his inspiration for writing, including reading about the radioactive Boy Scout and the banned Golden Book of Chemistry Experiments.
14. Does the event have particular local relevance?:
No
Press interest
23. Do you consider that the event will attract press interest?:
Yes
24. If yes, please summarise up to 4 key points you think will be of press interest:
BBC broadcaster Simon Mayo in Newcastle talking about his books for children, first of which was the bestselling debut children's hardback of 2012 Simon was inspired to write by his science mad and book loving son, and by interviewing scientists on his Radio 5 Live show Simon's visited 25 schools + 6 festivals to date across the country talking about ITCH but never come to Newcastle
25. Do you have any other comments you would like to make or information you would like to include?:
Most of his festival audiences have been families with kids aged 9 - 14 so by saying kids under 12 I wouldn't want to exclude older ones.
