New Bridges across Art and Science, (working title)
13. Description of the core message of your event and key topics to be covered (c.100 words):
Science communication through art collaboration. This will be an exciting project of 5 artist's residencies at Newcastle University's School of Sciences over 9 months, which will research, develop and explore new ideas, both in art and science. The aim is to encourage artists, scientists, and students to invent new works for exhibitions, discussions, presentations and workshops to feature at the British Science Festival. These events will be based at The NewBridge Project in its city centre site, and in an empty shop in Eldon Square Shopping Centre. Each scientist/artist collaboration will feature a different art and science discipline, and will be presented in varied formats to engage diverse audiences.
14. Does the event have particular local relevance?:
Yes
15. If so, please indicate what this is:
Although The NewBridge Project has national recognition, it focuses most of its art and education projects around engaging the public of the north east, and it is a Community Interest Company. Its position in the city centre of Newcastle, means it has a good walk in audience, and has a highly active online communication system which connects up with all areas of the regional art-world including the Baltic, Tyne & Wear Museums and the universities. It provides studios for 70 artists, including new graduates and mature professionals networking out into the community. The NewBridge Project has built up substantial audiences throughout the north east.
16. How does your event relate to this year's theme of 'Making waves'?:
'New Bridges' will create projects over a year that will send ripples through many areas of art, science, and education, because The NewBridge Project has a policy of adventurous collaborations in the north east. Over this period, the momentum will build through other art and science projects to gather a large and curious audience awaiting the final public event at the British Science Festival. Previous projects have focussed on interdisciplinary work and taking risks, which impact positively on many other organisations. It is currently developing an international exchange programme as well as its exciting exhibitions, which are shown in 4 galleries in its main city centre building. It sets examples and initiates for many major collaborative projects with outreach and public engagement being a major focus.
Press interest
23. Do you consider that the event will attract press interest?:
Yes
24. If yes, please summarise up to 4 key points you think will be of press interest:
The unusual aspect of 5 residencies in diverse areas, which address the topical science subjects of space, bees, computer psychology, mind and stress management, and synthetic life. The NewBridge Project already gets lots of press and media attention for its dynamic events. The ongoing interaction between the scientists and artists over 9 months, which will create a momentum of press interest. It encompasses several different public projects, which will be in places with large integral audiences, both at The NewBridge Project and Eldon Square Shopping Centre.
25. Do you have any other comments you would like to make or information you would like to include?:
Because of the inclusion of art and science together over several months, this accessible project will encourage and invite new people to engage with these subjects. It has a proven to be a good method of opening minds in the past. Please look at The NewBridge Project website for further information about the organisation and individual artists statements and images of their work - http://thenewbridgeproject.com
