Public artwork / installation / presentation crossing boundaries between art and science
13. Description of the core message of your event and key topics to be covered (c.100 words):
Increasingly artists and scientists work together and explore the interface between CP Snow's 'two cultures'. Scientific innovation can inspire and provide tools for artists whilst the perspective of artists may help communicate complex ideas about science. Drawing from this we will be inviting an artist of international standing to embark on a collaborative project that engages with scientific research facilities in the region to produce a public art installation that will be revelatory in nature and engage a broad audience with the themes of the Festival. This idea has been discussed with Arts Council England who are very supportive of the proposal and a funding application will be submitted to them.
14. Does the event have particular local relevance?:
15. If so, please indicate what this is:
The fundamental idea of this proposal is the interdisciplinary collaboration engaging an artist of international standing with research scientists and facilities based in the region. Place and context will be integral to the artwork and we will be drawing inspiration from both current research and the North East’s rich history of scientific and technological innovation.
16. How does your event relate to this year's theme of 'Making waves'?:
Work is currently underway to identify the artist and specific idea we will work with. We are starting from the idea of research which changes our lives now and in the future and how an artist will bring a different approach to exploring and presenting this.
