Rachel and the other demonstrators are graduate students at Newcastle University affiliated to the Faculty of Medical Sciences. Between them the demonstrators are members of the Institute of Cellular Medicine, the Institute of Cellular and Molecular Biosciences and the Centre for Oral Health Research. Most of the demonstrators are studying in the Dental School's Cellular and Molecular Biosciences lab where researchers are trying to investigate new ways of dispersing plaque and why excessive activation of the immune system can damage the mouth, which are the scientific topics underlying this event.
