NPL Water Rocket Challenge

Organised by the National Physical Laboratory (NPL), the NPL Water Rocket Challenge is a great day out which sees teams of rocketeers take to the skies with their own water rockets! Young People taking part in the challenge now have the opportunity to see if they qualify for a CREST Bronze Award.

The aim is to launch rockets powered by water/air pressure and  reliably land them in designated target zones, whilst trying to earn extra bonus points for long flight duration.

The 2013 NPL Water Rocket Challenge will be held on Wednesday 19 June at the NPL Sports Club. With 45 launch bays there will be lots of teams competing from across the UK.

How does the NPL Water Rockets Challenge fit with CREST Awards?

In taking part in the challenge, students will already be demonstrating many of the skills needed to obtain a CREST Award.

For example, working systematically, solving problems creatively and presenting their work. Students participating in the NPL Water Rockets Challenge may consider entering for a CREST Bronze Award.

I’m a school that regularly enters the Challenge - What do I / we need to do to register for CREST?

Tick the CREST box when completing the Water Rocket Challenge signing-up form. Your details will then be shared with the British Science Association and your CREST Local Coordinator will then contact you to progress your application.  To find out details go to Once registered you will receive your CREST Profile forms for your students to use as a record of their project.

We’re a CREST school / STEM club and we’re interesting in finding out more about the Water Rocket Challenge – where do we go?
