The Schools Discovery Day will include a special train journey along the Talyllyn Railway incorporating science and engineering activities as they travel and at stations. There are two different streams to the Discovery Day, one for younger students and one for older students. Year 9 students will be set a design and build challenge as teams of engineers, this will involve researching, travelling along the line to Dolgoch to investigate the viaduct and then returning to our education room at Wharf station to design and build a viaduct for a train to cross. For Year 6 students a return train journey from Wharf to Abergynolwyn will be provided. Each carriage will contain a different National Science & Engineering Week activity for them to complete along the journey. There will be time for the students and teachers to see the engine taking on water and to ask the crew questions. Hands-on activities will be held at Abergynolwyn station and the students will be able to watch the engine uncouple and run round ready to pull their carriages back to Wharf station. The day will be facilitated in English but written instructions will be available in both English and Welsh for the activities. Booking for this event is essential.
