6. Event/activity description (max 300 words):
The Sheffield popmaths quiz is a free event run along the lines of a pub quiz (but without the alcohol!). School teams register to take part in groups of up to 6, in four age categories - Y6, Y7-9, Y10/11, Y12/13. There are 20 questions, read out one by one. This part of the event lasts one hour, so teams have approximately 3 minutes to to work on each question. There will be a short pause half way through where teams can ask for questions to be repeated. Winners receive plaques and a trophy for the school to retain for the year. This year we have 175 teams registered - around 1000 contestants in all! The quiz is followed by a guest lecture, with seats for 450. The lecture is intended to be entertaining and relevant in some way to Maths. Previously we have had magicians and jugglers, for example, who present aspects of the subject in an entertaining and engaging way. This year we have been fortunate to get Matt Parker - stand-up mathematician - who is talking on 'Useful maths you'll never use!'. More information at http://popmaths.com.
