6. Event/activity description (max 300 words):

Blists Hill Victorian Town is a 56 acre Heritage site normally associated in visitors' minds with Victorian history.  We would like to show the wealth of science and technology within the site and engage the visiting public with as much of this as possible in a hands-on practical way.  We can show how the raw materials of the area were mined and refined, used in locally based industries and then shipped across the world.  The methods and dangers of mining the coal, clay and minerals, the forces used to move material and machinery and the remains of the areas industrial past that can now be explored are all  part of the days offerings. We will be showing how to survey an area without the used of modern technology, send messages without electricity, sort precious minerals from rocks and many things that gases are responsible for from explosions to your daily bread. Some of the machinery around the site will be seen working and the principles of using steam, water and compressed air as power sources will be explained.
