CREST Bronze
Investigate the problem of acid rain
Monitor levels of atmospheric sulphur dioxide and rainfall acidity. Your results are likely to vary with different weather conditions. This may give you clues about the source(s) of the acid. You should spread your investigation over many months, so that you can compare results for both winter and summer.
CREST Silver
Investigate pollution in water courses
Contrary to what Water Authorities and bottled water manufacturers would have us believe, pure water is extremely rare. Drinking water is a carefully controlled solution. Natural water courses, even in the depths of the countryside are a complex cocktail of who knows what. Sometimes we need to know what. In this project you will check two different bodies of water for pollutants – i.e. solutes regarded as undesirable.
Gold Award
Investigate whether lead from petrol still persists at the roadside
Research ways of detecting low concentrations of lead, and apply these to test samples from the environment. The objective is to determine whether there is a lurking legacy of lead.
