Make your own animation using a rotating drum and a ‘film strip’
Animation is used in all sorts of telly programmes and films. Start by finding out about all the different types; for example, what sort of animation is used in Wallace & Gromit or The Simpsons, or big pictures like Toy Story 3 or Up.

Restoring art work
Every major art gallery has a scientific department, or easy access to scientific knowledge. There are many modern scientific techniques to find out about the sorts of materials and methods artists used – when we look at a painting now it‟s not always the same as when the artist painted it many years ago. Lots of materials change over the years because of chemical changes caused, for example, by interactions with light or oxygen. For this project you can carry different tests on various types of paints (you could even make some paints yourself). You can also look at different ways of restoring old paintings. Contact an analytical chemist from an art gallery, or a university department specialising in art conservation and restoration.

Build a pinhole camera
Pinhole cameras can be made very simply, and they take reasonable pictures. But it‟s a little more complicated to make a pinhole camera that takes a good picture, has an automatic shutter, has a mechanism to wind on commercially-available film, looks like a real camera, etc. In this project you‟ll investigate pinhole cameras and design and build your own.
