Hi! We are Alice, Monica and Toby
Alice Taylor-Gee, Science in Society Manager
(job share with Monica)
I manage the Science in Society team to develop a unique and innovative programme of schemes and events for scientists, science communicators and the public. I also work closely with external collaborators and funders on the development of the programme and devise and implement a fundraising strategy. I like to disseminate and share good practice amongst the science communication community and represent the British Science Association on external committees.
I have sat on the judging panel for both BBSRC and EPSRC public engagement grants and been a reviewer for Wellcome Trust public engagement awards. I have also been a guest lecturer on the Science Communication Masters course at University of the West of England. Academic wise, I have a Masters in Chemistry from the University of East Anglia and a Post Graduate Diploma in Science Communication from the Australian National University. I have managed the team since 2006 and currently work part time, sharing the role with Monica Lobo. Check out my LinkedIn profile | Contact Alice
Monica Lobo, Science in Society Manager
(job share with Alice)
I love science and I have even been a scientist for a short while. An unexpected detour at the European Space Agency made me appreciate working in other science related roles.
With different professional experiences I realised what other ingredients I wanted to add: working with and for people, a good challenge and thinking out of the box.
And that is why I fit so well in this great team, all the ingredients are there - I help scientists and engineers to effectively communicate why they love their work and I provide opportunities for different audiences to discuss science and engineering in a way that matters to them.
I am always seeking for new projects and partnerships opportunities so get in touch if you think we could work together. I also do love a good chat.

Toby Shannon, Science in Society Officer
I love working in public engagement – I find it incredibly exciting to work with researchers of all disciplines and help them to spread their stories far and wide, through all sorts of interesting methods. I really believe in the importance of not only communicating science but also in engaging with the public in a meaningful way, so that it benefits everyone. We put this ethos into practice through all of our science in society programmes and also through our involvement with Sciencewise – for whom I work as a Policy Officer.
Following on from an undergraduate degree in Physics with Nuclear Astrophysics at the University of Surrey, I moved on to the University of the West of England and graduated from their (amazing) MSc in Science Communication. I’ve been working with the British Science Association since 2010. Contact Toby
