CREST Bronze
Make your own fizzy drink and compare it to a shop bought one
Fizzy drinks are fizzy because carbon dioxide has been pumped through them. But people have also been able to make fizzy drinks for hundreds of years by fermenting them. This is when yeast is used to make the carbon dioxide. In this project you’re going to make your own additive-free fizzy drink using yeast. You can compare it to a fizzy drink you can buy.
CREST Silver
Investigate how using additives affects the shelf-life of fizzy drinks
Traditional fizzy drinks were made by fermentation using yeast. In this project you’re going to make some fermented fizzy drinks so you can investigate the affect of using additives and varying brewing conditions on their shelf-life.
CREST Gold
Compare the nutritional values of fizzy drinks and fruit juices
Fizzy drinks are considered unhealthy due to their high sugar content and the amount of additives they contain. On the other hand fruit juices are often seen as a healthy alternative, and of greater nutritional value. In this project you are going to carry out quantitative experiments to determine the concentration of some of the ingredients of these two types of drinks. Using your results you will decide what the health benefits or risks are from drinking them and publish your findings for a particular target audience.
