This project will involve 5 artist's residencies based at Newcastle University and The NewBridge Project. The residency subjects and participants are - The Mind Machine (Binaural Rhythms) - Quoc Vuong, Neuroscience Department and artist, Rosie Skett, who creates audio-visual interactive installations. Super-natural, between magic & science – Dr Wendy Smith, Synthetic Biology and artist, Sneha Solanki, who works with technology and ideas about new science. Crowds & Swarms – Dr Roy Sanderson, Biology and bees, and artist Cath Keay, who is a sculptor exploiting hands off mechanisms to create art using insects. Computers and Changing Brains, Dr Laura Pereira, Neuroscience Department, and artist Dave Lisser, who invents futuristic sculptures and machines, exploring contemporary communication devices. Heavenly Bodies – The Human Spaceship, Dr Georgina Carr, Biomedical Science, and artist Helen Schell, who creates mixed media installations about astrophysics and the cosmos. This will examine the human body in space. She is a STEM Ambassador. These exciting projects will culminate in interactive exhibitions, a debate forum, presentations and workshops. The NewBridge Project is developing an unusual format, so that audiences and participants will be curious and engaged. developing a continuing legacy of art & science projects for the future. All 5 artists already work in the field of science and have participated in previous projects of this nature. Dates: Residencies begin 1st December 2012 and end 1st September 2013. Science communication through art collaboration. This will be an exciting project of 5 artist's residencies at Newcastle University's School of Sciences over 9 months, which will research, develop and explore new ideas, both in art and science. The aim is to encourage artists, scientists, and students to invent new works for exhibitions, discussions, presentations and workshops to feature at the British Science Festival. These events will be based at The NewBridge Project in its city centre site, and in an empty shop in Eldon Square Shopping Centre. Each scientist/artist collaboration will feature a different art and science discipline, and will be presented in varied formats to engage diverse audiences.

Although The NewBridge Project has national recognition, it focuses most of its art and education projects around engaging the public of the north east, and it is a Community Interest Company. Its position in the city centre of Newcastle, means it has a good walk in audience, and has a highly active online communication system which connects up with all areas of the regional art-world including the Baltic, Tyne & Wear Museums and the universities. It provides studios for 70 artists, including new graduates and mature professionals networking out into the community. The NewBridge Project has built up substantial audiences throughout the north east.

The unusual aspect of 5 residencies in diverse areas, which address the topical science subjects of space, bees, computer psychology, mind and stress management, and synthetic life. The NewBridge Project already gets lots of press and media attention for its dynamic events. The ongoing interaction between the scientists and artists over 9 months, which will create a momentum of press interest. It encompasses several different public projects, which will be in places with large integral audiences, both at The NewBridge Project and Eldon Square Shopping Centre.

Because of the inclusion of art and science together over several months, this accessible project will encourage and invite new people to engage with these subjects. It has a proven to be a good method of opening minds in the past.
