Events offered range from exhibitions with short hands on demonstrations to full day workshops, and can be tailored accordingly inbetween.
17. What will the format of your event be?:
18. Please give any details about the format of your event you feel are relevant.:
The solar car out reach team work on several formats of interactive delivery from short 10 minute ‘sound bites’ with participants at exhibitions creating a fruit battery, positioning solar cells to convert the most sun’s energy or building an electric motor. Through schools work with balloon propelled car races or demonstrating our solar powered cars. Following the success of our drivable half scale solar car (e.g. http://www.bbc.co.uk/newsround/20025147) Gwawr are looking to launch their new programme of hands on solar car driving in the spring of 2013. We are currently developing six 1m long fully functional radio controlled solar powered cars. These will be based on cars from around the world which currently participate in the solar challenge series. During events we expect visitors to be able to test and drive these cars, or in some cases to take part in a race series of varying lengths (e.g. between 1 and 3hours). This demonstrates how to drive in an energy efficient manner in a fun environment.
Venue and location to be allocated by the Festival team
20. Venue requirements:
Exhibition space that could accomodate tables to host demonstrations and space for our scale solar powered car or a large outdoor venue to demonstrate the 6 radio controlled solar cars, where a race course could be built.
13. Description of the core message of your event and key topics to be covered (c.100 words):
Energy cannot be created or destroyed, but only changed from one form to another. So if we want to keep moving we need to consider carefully how we use energy. Hybrid and electric vehicles are currently taking the market by storm, but these are still deriving their energy from non-renewable, polluting sources such as coal fired power stations. Meanwhile individuals are jumping on the band wagon of creating their own electricity with solar panels on their roofs. Is it even conceivable that vehicles could be powered from these renewable sources? Gwawr, the Welsh Solar Car Team, run interactive workshops delving into the technology behind sustainable transport. Investigating areas such as where energy comes from, how it can be stored and how this energy can be used to power vehicles.
22. Do you consider that the event will attract press interest?:
23. If yes, please summarise up to 4 key points you think will be of press interest:
Previous work has generated considerable press interest, our scale solar car demonstrations were recently filmed for Newsround (http://www.bbc.co.uk/newsround/20025147) and previously on BBC Wales and the Welsh magasine show Mosgito (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/wales/8115767.stm). The full size car has also regularly featured in the press and on the radio, both in the UK and around the world. A summary of some of these articles can be found at http://www.solarcarwales.co.uk/media_eng1.htm)

24. Do you have any other comments you would like to make or information you would like to include?:
Gwawr saw approximately 21,000 people in the various events they participated in last year ranging from schools work at primary and secondary level through to presentations at Wrexham Science week and demonstrations at the Welsh Eisteddfod. May we take this opportunity to offer BSA our best wishes with the science festival event.
