3. Event / activity title:
NSEW Invention and Discovery Days
5. Event or activity description (max 300 words):
The aim of our 3 day secondary school event is to raise the profile of STEM subjects in our junior school by making them aware of the contributions scientists and engineers have made to modern society, and encouraging them to emulate their innovations and discoveries. Each of the 3 days will involve one year group coming off timetable to cycle round various themed activities. S3 will investigate sports drinks and their effects. This will involve collaboration across all STEM subjects and include art, PE and HE. Activities include testing the effect of current drinks on heart rate etc, and chemical analysis of pH and ion content, but will focus on the manufacture, design and marketing of an in-house sports drink for the school. S1/2 will start their day by constructing a bridge from limited materials, to bridge a given gap and bear a minimum load. We then hope to engage a local stem ambassador to highlight some British engineering firsts in terms of bridge design and construction. This will incorporate a treasure trail to match the structure to the engineer. Pupils will consolidate their activities by evaluating their own structures and suggesting improvements before being peer assessed. The winning teams will present to a plenary assembly at the end of the day.
