6. Event/activity description (max 300 words):

The aim of the day is to explain the science and engineering behind renewable energy technologies through a range of themed activities. The afternoon session is aimed at young people and families, looking at energy in its broadest sense, why sources of renewable energy are important, and how different types of technologies actually work. This will be hands on science and engineering appealing to a wide age range. In the evening we will invite an expert (possibly from a developer in tidal stream technology) to give a presentation followed by a chaired discussion. The evening will help put some of the recent activity on Eday into a scientific/engineering context and give residents a better understanding of what is happening on their doorsteps. As a backdrop to the day there will be a renewable energy display/exhibition to include working models, photographs of the construction of the community turbine, information about the sailed windmills used to grind grain in the past and a series of graphs and charts linking - for example – local weather conditions to power generation.
