Crime scene investigation/forensic science
5. Event or activity description (max 300 words):
We have designed a fantastic scheme especially for National Science & Engineering Week called "Toes For Turf". The science behind fingerprints is well known. What is not so well known is the science behind footprints or "feet prints". This activity enables students to take, classify and "lift" both fingerprints and foot prints. As the research on footprints is meagre, this scheme will allow students to make some discoveries about the correlation or otherwise between fingerprints and feet prints. This directly impacts on the theme of National Science & Engineering Week 2013 i.e inventions and discoveries. In addition, there is a fun assignment to compare family fingerprints with the student's. This will show the random nature of marks. Each kit comes with an easy to follow lesson plan, PowerPoint, fingerprint/footprint ink, brushes, certificates and stickers, risk assessments and all the paperwork for a great day. The scheme is called "Toes to Turf" as a portion of the profits goes to an orphanage in Eastern Bulgaria to build a football pitch. More information can be found at www.toesforturf.tel where a specimen lesson plan can be downloaded and further information about the orphanage is forthcoming. Ring Steve Gaskin on 01603864647 for more information.
