Four pioneering scientists from one small corner of the West Country who changed the world will be celebrated at Lacock in Wiltshire. The event will offer talks, information displays, a fun children’s trail and hands on activities that will provide something of interest for all ages. Dr. Edward Jenner from Berkeley, Sir William Herschel a Hanoverian from Bath, William Henry Fox Talbot from Lacock and Rev. Dr. Nevil Maskelyne from Purton lived within a 30 mile radius of Bath. Their inventions and discoveries changed not only our world, but how we view the universe. Jenner pioneered vaccination against smallpox, saving millions of lives; Fox Talbot created the first photographic negative; Herschel discovered the planet Uranus and infrared radiation; Maskelyne devised the Lunar method of calculating longitude and established Greenwich as the Prime Meridian. Find out about these great men, book on the day for talks about them, take part in a trail and enjoy various hands on activities to make and take home.
