Geevor Tin Mine Museum will be holding its annual ‘Scrapheap Challenge’ to tie in with National Science & Engineering Week. Geevor Tin Mine Museum is situated in the far west of Cornwall and was once a working tin mine. The Cornish Mining industry has produced some of the best inventors and engineers in our country’s history: Richard Trevithick, Sir Humphry Davy, William Bickford and Michael Loam to name a few. Geevor is running Scrapheap Challenge to encourage the inventors, engineers and scientists of the future and to show how much fun science can be. Scrapheap Challenge is an event open to all ages and abilities and we encourage multi-generational teams. The challenge is to invent and build a waterwheel that will pull a cart up a track in the fastest time. Each team has 45 minutes to make their waterwheel using material from our scrap store. The prize for the winning school taking part is £100 and each member of the winning school team will receive a family membership to Geevor Tin Mine Museum for a year. The prize for museum visitors will be a £25 gift voucher to spend in Geevor Mine Shop. Last year Geevor won the ’Best Engineering Event’ award for Scrapheap Challenge and this year we are using some of the prize money to make the event bigger and better. Please join us and enjoy a great day out with the chance to show off your inventing skills at the same time!
