6. Event/activity description (max 300 words):
Prior to and throughout his 16 year tenure at Craven Street, Benjamin Franklin's scientific endeavours resulted in exciting new knowledge regarding the true nature of electricity, the precise path of the Gulf Stream, the relationship between a canal's depth and the speed of the barges travelling down them, and many other diverse areas of science. Such discoveries prompted Franklin to invent devices such as the lightning rod, the Franklin Stove, and a musical instrument he called the Glass Armonica. Participating school students will recreate one of Franklin's investigations by: experiencing an indoor lightning storm; racing boats down our canal and measuring their speed; or discovering the steps Franklin took to invent the Armonica, a replica of which pupils can play themselves! A complimentary outreach workshop called 'Become an Inventor' is also available to schools throughout the school year.
