Geology Section

The Geology section organises a range of events at each year's British Science Festival that seek to emphasise the relevance of geoscience to society, to explain the dramatic processes that shape our planet and to provide anyone who attends the opportunity to meet and chat with some of the best known and active researchers in the field. Events in recent years have explored the impact of earthquakes in the U.K. and abroad, carbon capture and storage, the spectacular landscapes of Mars and the impact of environmental change on society. In keeping with the subject, we also try to arrange a field excursion at each festival that provides participants to stretch their legs and get out into the country's spectacular landscapes.

''Since starting as a lecturer at Keele University in 2001, I have been passionate about widening participation in science. As the "recorder" of the geology section, I help to arrange and organise sessions at successive festivals in collaboration with organisations like the Geological Society of London, the Geologists' Association and the British Geological Survey. Active participation with the British Science Association has enabled me to meet a series of inspirational scientists and to engage with a extraordinary range of people who attend our events. These experiences have helped me to improve my own science communication skills, hopefully to the benefit of the students I teach on a day-to-day basis'' - Dr Richard Waller, Section Recorder
